Oldland Parish Council Installs Commemorative Bench to Honor D-Day Anniversary

Oldland Parish Council has unveiled a new bench to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal moment in World War II history. The bench, paid for with Community Infrastructure funds, stands opposite the Queen's Platinum Jubilee bench outside The Lamb public house in Cadbury Heath.

The parish council chose this location because of its central point in the community, easily accessible to everyone, and hopes that people passing by will take a moment to sit, reflect, and remember the extraordinary bravery of our veterans.

The decision to install the bench was made by the parish council to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought during the Second World War and the bench itself serves as a poignant reminder of the historic events of D-Day, depicting the five beaches of Omaha, Gold, Sword, Juno, and Utah, where Allied troops landed on June 6, 1944.

A quote from the Royal British Legion highlights the immense coordination and sacrifice that characterized the D-Day landings: "Unprecedented coordination between Allied nations, and the intensive planning of engineers, meteorologists, logisticians, and countless more, led to a force from 13 countries approaching Normandy in a 5000-vessel armada. In the early hours of D-Day, 24,000 paratroopers and glider-borne troops landed behind German lines to provide tactical support. Massive naval and aerial bombardments attempted to suppress the German defences and weaponry. Then a ground force of more than 130,000 troops came ashore on five beaches across a 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast, with the first waves often facing intact defences. By the end of D-Day there had been 10,000 allied casualties. Yet this was only the beginning. The ensuing Battle of Normandy was to last into August and cost tens of thousands of lives as it defeated and repulsed the occupying German forces eastwards. It was a decisive success for the Allies and paved the way for the liberation of much of northwest Europe."

As the years pass, the council hopes that the bench will continue to serve as a symbol of gratitude and remembrance for the sacrifices made by past generations.

Annual Parish Meeting of Oldland

The Annual Parish Meeting of Oldland will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 19th March at Cadbury Heath Hall.

The Annual Parish Meeting is not a Parish Council meeting. The Local Government Act states that every parish must hold Parish Meeting a year and this must be held between 1st March and 1st June.   The Agenda is a standard agenda to give reports on the business of the last 12 months. The Parish Council reports to its electorate on its activities over the last year and perhaps from any voluntary or local community group. It is also an opportunity for residents to question people and organisations on any issues relating to the parish.  As the Annual Parish Meeting is not a parish council meeting it is not conducted in the same way or governed by the same rules as a parish council meeting. Members of the public are permitted to make statements on relevant matters during the meeting and any resolutions passed do not bind the Parish Council.  Any resident of Oldland Parish is welcome to attend.  Items of business are as follows:-

1. Election of Chairman

2. Minutes of the Annual Parish Meeting 2023

3. Matters Arising

4. Chairman’s Report

5. To receive the Financial Statement for the year ended 31 March 2023

6. Committee Reports

a) Community & Environment Committee

b) Planning & Highways Committee

c) Finance & Policies Committee

7. Community Group Reports

8. Parish Development Specialist’s Report

9. Other Business

Access Improved to Cock Road Ridge

In response to residents identifying a need to improve access to Cock Road Ridge from Wraxall Road work has been undertaken to create a safer and more accessible point for people visiting or commuting through the nature reserve.  The improvements have been delivered through the Common Connections project working in collaboration with South Gloucestershire Council and Ridge Ranger volunteers.

Common Connections is a partnership project between South Gloucestershire Council and the West of England Combined Authority, consisting of a 4-year project to restore, improve and connect green spaces along the border of South Gloucestershire and East Bristol to benefit both nature and people introducing more wildflowers and habitat features to help wildlife and boost biodiversity.

The Ridge Rangers, being led by residents, is keen to address some of the most often muddy paths that restrict access to the nature reserve and have a negative impact on the surrounding habitat.

The work consisted of improving surfacing with steps leading up the previously muddy bank and a helpful new handrail. Along with additional fencing a new gate has been installed with modifications made to existing fencing to ensure small children and dogs can’t run straight out onto the busy road.

A guide to knife harm for parents and carers

Whatever the reason a young person is involved in knife crime, it is likely to have something to do with fear.

South Glos Council, through the #SouthGlos Violence Reduction Partnership, has worked with charity the Ben Kinsella Trust to reproduce a guide for parents and carers to help them speak to their child about knife crime and the risks and devastating consequences of carrying a weapon.

The booklet can be viewed or downloaded here:  https://beta.southglos.gov.uk/static/e8a46bda01bf0a700ffb6fe7b7e168fd/Knife-crime-guide.pdf

Getting the Environment Right

Getting the Environment Right

Climate Change is a hot topic. Oldland Parish Council is keen to help pave the way for a greener and prosperous future for our natural and lived environment. Visit our Dedicated Page to hear what people have told us, how we are responding and what more we plan to do. Make further suggestions and find out how to get more involved.

Jubilee Park – Community Engagement

We have been delighted to be involved in the consultation for the design of the new Jubilee Park in the former Warmley Golf Course. The new facility will further complement our existing open spaces, natural habitat, protection of our trees, planting, and allotments.

Visit our Getting the Environment Right Page to link to the South Gloucestershire consultation.

Share The Path

To promote active travel our good friends at the Bristol East Fringe Cycle and Walking Group have been busy putting up Share the Path signs along the Bristol to Bath Railway Path.

The Share the Path signs are intended to be a temporary measure pending installation of permanent signage as part of an overall Railway Path improvement programme, hopefully building on the Sustrans BS5 One Path project which is currently delivering path enhancements in the Bristol area.

Visit the New Oldland Parish Council Website to find out more about the Bristol East Fringe Cycling and Walking Group.

Getting Around

Phase Two is now live!

Making Oldland Parish a more Vibrant place to Live, Work and Play: our New Oldland Parish Hub is live!

Thank you to the many people that have so far contributed to our community engagement project using the Interactive Map. Your input is extremely valuable and helped to create a good foundation on which to find sustainable solutions. Phase Two of the project seeks to build on what we have learnt and begin to focus on key themed.

The New Oldland Parish Hub provides access to unique pages dedicated to key themes. You can still have your say by continuing to use the Interactive Map or contribute by interacting with a theme. The themes focus on Getting Around, Getting Actively Involved, Getting Our Environment Right and Getting Young People Involved.

As your first tier of Local Government, we are keen to offer people every opportunity to get involved. If you have a keen interest in any of the themes and like to become more active in developing ideas, please make contact.

Example: under the theme of Getting Around ‘pavement parking’ has been raised as a significant issue. Not just does pavement parking effect people’s ability to get around it puts people in danger. However, some consider it reasonable for people to walk out into the road regardless. If this is an issue that affects you or someone you know, either interact using the New Oldland Parish Hub or get in touch.

Visit the New Oldland Parish Hub to hear what people have told us, listen to what we initially plan to do and find out how you can get involved. The new platform provides an interactive tool for communicating with our community. We are keen to get conversations going about key issues and concerns and get the communities backing for making changes where needed. If you are unable to use or access the technology, please get involved using email, letter, or telephone. There is still nothing better than a face-to-face conversation, so we are also keen to meet people on an individual basis and anyone is welcome to attend one of our council meetings. We want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to have their say and get actively involved.
