Getting Around

What you have told us

Most comments expressed on our interactive map have related to getting around.

Speeding has been one of the most prominent highlighting many trouble spots across the parish.

Issues of anti-social driving 'racing' had been reported on the Ring Road. People spoke about dangerous driving conditions and the disturbance caused to local residents. to what would otherwise be quieter roads.  Some roads like the bottom of California Road have become dangerous rat runs.  This being particularity dangerous to young people that choose to walk or cycle to school.

People also spoke about speeding on Craven Way, Cadbury Heath Road, Parkwall Road and Tower Road South and highlighted dangerous crossing at intersections and roundabouts for both drivers, cyclist, and pedestrians.

Pavement parking is a prominent parish wide issue restricting people from moving about.  This applying to all people inclusive of parents walking their children to school, people with mobility difficulties and elderly people having to venture on to dangerous roads to get around poorly parked vehicles.

Concerns have also been raised about the poor condition of pathways, including the Ring Road Cycle Path.

People also told us about the inconvenience and dangers of overgrown vegetation on cycle and walk ways and poor lighting for those needing to access cycling and walking infrastructure during dark hours.

What we plan to do

We have begun working more collaboratively with the South Gloucestershire Transport and Highways Department.  This involves improving lines of communication to ensure that problem areas are correctly identified and accurately evidenced regarding speeding.

The work will help to determine the best locations for Speed Visors to collect data.

The work will be supported by our local Community Speed Watch Team.

Community Speed Watch acts as a deterrent to people that persist to speed and pro-actively supports policing to make our roads safer for everyone.

We also plan to map out danger spots i.e., dangerous crossings, in more detail and further work with the Local Authority to come up with some workable solutions.  These issues will be placed on the Oldland Parish Council agenda of the Planning and Highways Committee to monitor progress.

Under the guidance of Oldland Parish Council, we have helped to establish the Bristol East Fringe Cycling and Walking Group.

The autonomous group has a wide brief promoting the local and national cycling and walking agenda to encourage greener choices for getting around.

Pro-active partnerships have been developed with neighbouring parish and district council working collectively with local residents.

The group take the credit for much of the vegetation cut back in the Oldland Parish area and cycle routes.

The group has been instrumental in securing a fully funded feasibility study and subsequent business plan to support improvements to Keynsham Road.

This scheme is support by both South Gloucestershire Council, Bath and Northeast Somerset and WECA (West of England Combined Authority). For more info visit: BRISTOL EAST FRINGE CYCLING & WALKING GROUP : Oldland Parish Council
