Local Transport Opportunity

The parishes of Oldland, Bitton and Siston have an opportunity to submit a grant application to WestLocal via WECA (West of England Community Authority).

The objective is to source funding to support the development of a new local transport scheme.

WestLocal is looking for scheme ideas that:

  • Are locally designed.
  • Introduce new provision rather than sustaining schemes and services that are already in place.
  • Operate not-for-profit, with any surplus reinvested in the scheme.
  • Help reduce carbon emissions by moving people away from reliance on privately-owned cars.
  • Demonstrate clear demand within the community for the service.
  • Have a clear plan for ongoing monitoring and improvement during the funding period.

Some examples of the types of schemes you may wish to set up are:

  • Bus routes operated on fixed routes and timetables.
  • Pre-booked minibus services to key locations such as supermarkets, shopping centres, local towns, and transport interchanges (such as major bus stops on the key transport corridors).
  • Pre-booked flexible minibus services.

We want to find out what kind of scheme could best serve our local area.  To evidence this we need to know what kind of local transport scheme would best suit you.

It is worth noting that the grant is likely to fund a minibus type scheme operating once or twice a day in each direction morning and / or evening. The grant will not stretch to cover a full bus service and once the grant expires the new service will need to be commercially viable.
